Chain of custody is normally a legal term in which you have something and you really know who
has an item at every moment, with people signing for receipt and transfer. To the extent that the
term “chain of custody” is normally used, Q7A does not expect it for reference standards. Section
11.1 states that records should be maintained regarding the storage and use of standards. So
you should make sure that it is being stored and handled correctly. If you are shipping the
standard half way around the world from a central location, you probably want some sort of
information regarding its handling or some way of knowing that the standard is still acceptable.
