If they are in conjunction for the procedure, you
shouldn’t bill them separately. A lidocaine injection is
always included in a laceration repair. Say a patient
comes in with a fracture and while they’re in the ED, an
orthopedic consultant is called. While waiting for the
orthopedist, the patient receives a pain medicine injection.
Then, the consultant arrives, takes the patient to the operating
room, and gives regular anesthesia. In that case, I
think you would be fine coding for that pain injection
because it wasn’t done as part of the surgical procedure.
